Melrose House is one of the last surviving ‘grand’ homes of Nelson. Situated close to the Nelson city centre in a private and spacious garden, the House displays characteristic Victorian grandeur with polished native rimu timber floors, high ceilings and crystal chandeliers, and its classic features include deeply moulded sash windows and fire surrounds as well as ornate balustrading on the timber staircase.
From every window there are striking views either of the gardens or across the treetops to the sea. Now owned by Nelson City Council and managed by a charitable society, refurbishments over recent years have ensured that Melrose House will continue to attract visitors in the future.
Extensive sheltered and private gardens surround the House and historic specimen trees and shrubs provide interest through the seasons. A self-tour garden map is available to visitors.
Today Melrose House is used for boutique weddings, meetings, cocktail parties, literary and musical events, birthdays, wakes and other special occasions. There is free on-site car parking and Melrose House Café provide elegant dining, coffee and cake, high teas, and gourmet catering by arrangement.
The Cafe offers excellent catering for functions of any kind be it birthdays, meetings or special family occasions.
